Meta launched Muse on September 8, 2026, and the AI agent immediately climbed to the top of the U.S. App Store, surpassing ChatGPT in downloads. The system is marketed as a personal AI that can act on behalf of users, handling:
- shopping,
- email,
- travel bookings
- and even making phone calls to businesses.
Unlike traditional chatbots that only answer questions, Muse executes multi?step tasks without constant user guidance, positioning itself as the first widely available autonomous agent for everyday consumers.
From Shopping to Home Management: Real-World Tasks
In practice Muse can:
- navigate websites,
- fill forms and
- negotiate prices using a built?in browser.
It can read a user’s email, extract a travel itinerary and automatically book a cheaper flight, or scan a social media post for a recipe and add the ingredients to a grocery list while respecting dietary restrictions stored in the user’s profile. When an action requires payment, Muse generates a virtual card for that single transaction, keeping the real card number hidden from merchants.
Control, Limits, and What Users Should Expect
Muse operates inside a secure cloud virtual machine that isolates its activities from the rest of Meta’s infrastructure. A second AI called Sentinel watches every request before it reaches the internet, and the agent must ask for explicit permission before:
- sending emails,
- placing orders or
- making calls.
The promise of hands?free automation is tempered by real?world errors. Internal tests revealed Muse exposing personal photos after misinterpreting a request to identify toys at a birthday party, and instances where orders were placed incorrectly because the agent misread a price filter. Meta delayed the launch earlier in the year to address these security gaps, and the current version still requires users to approve irreversible actions such as purchases or phone calls.
Amazon reacted by blocking Muse from its marketplace, citing concerns that the agent could browse without clear identification and handle payment credentials. In contrast, Shopify partnered with Meta, allowing Muse to complete purchases through Shop Pay while keeping the merchant’s terms intact. The stock market responded positively, with Meta shares rising about 25 percent in September 2026, the strongest monthly gain in two years, as investors bet on subscription revenue from the Power and Maximum plans priced at $20 and $100 per month.
For users, the balance is clear: Muse can dramatically reduce the time spent on routine digital chores, but it does not replace human judgment. The agent shines when it has access to well?structured data—like a calendar or shopping list—and falters when it must interpret ambiguous requests. As Meta expands Muse to smart glasses and additional countries, the real test will be whether the system can maintain safety while delivering the convenience it promises, keeping the user firmly in the loop for decisions that matter most.
